Photography of the execution phase of “Cocoon”, Nandipha Mntambo’s sculpture

I joined the team commissioned for the execution phase of a sculpture authored by the artist Nandipha Mntambo.
To define the bearing structure and build the sculpture, we followed the previously designed drawings and photorealistic 3d images -digital models of “Cocoon”. Additionally, I took these photos of the process.

We harvested raw materials from local sources -bamboo excess from the Lisbon Botanic Garden - using hand powered tools. For the main structure, we opted for building directly from scratch an irregular geodesic mesh, stacking the bamboo poles in the garden. The elements are joined together using natural unwaxed linen thread and pita fiber. For the final texture, we interwove arundo donax with the structure.
