Execution phase of “Cocoon”, Nandipha Mntambo’s sculpture
3rd June – 14th June 2011

I joined the team commissioned for the execution phase to define the bearing structure and build the sculpture from the artist Nandipha Mntambo.
It was done following the previously designed drawings and 3d photorealistic digital models of “Cocoon”.

The harvest of the raw materials from local sources -excess bamboo from the Lisboa Botanic Garden- was made with hand powered tools.
For the main structure we opted for building from scratch in the garden an irregular geodesic mesh stucking the bambo stick in the soil.
The elements are joined together using natural pita fibre.
The final texture is interweaved arundo donax with the structure
